Awareness in Chemical Handling via Understanding of the CSDS
COURSE CONTENT & ITINERARY Duration: 1 day

Objective: Create, instil and engage awareness of the importance of knowing and conforming to chemical specifications, guidelines and recommendation displayed in a C.S.D.S (Chemical Safety Data Sheet) of chemical substances being handled; as to avoid health related risk and loss control that can cause an impact to the environment.
Who should attend? : Maintenance team, store and warehouse team, operational and production team involves in handling chemicals. EMS committee/task force members, internal auditors and the EMR, and HSE personnel.

·         Delegates’ registration.
9.00am – 10.00am
·         Introduction to common issues in chemical handling;
·         The Chemical Safety Data Sheet (CSDS) in SHE-MS;
·         What is CSDS & its importance in chemical handling;
·         CSDS – its legal requirement;
10.00am – 10.30am
·         Morning tea-break
10.30am – 12.30am
·         Overview of internationally banned substances based on RoHS and REACH requirements;
·         (exclusive notes on banned chemicals under ROHS)
·         Industrial hygiene and toxicology from CSDS information;
·         (exclusive discussion and notes on actinic rays, anthracene, arsenic, tar, creosote)
·         Degreasing agents in degreasing process;
·         Machining of metals using coolants and lubricants;
·         Paints and solvents usage in paint-works;
12.30pm – 2.00pm
·         Lunch break
2.00pm – 3.30pm
·         Chemical handling and health hazard; what and how?
·         Chemical classification of contaminants in chemical handling;
·         Physical classification;
·         Pathological classification;
·         (exclusive notes on pathological classification’s health effects: irritation, asphyxia, anoxia, anesthesia, etc.)
·         Why need to understand CSDS? And which information is used in chemical handling?
·         Elaboration on the legal requirement under Occupational Safety and Health (Classification, Packaging and Labeling) Regulations, 1997;
·         Samples of chemical labels and PPE required in chemical handling;
·         (exclusive notes – NIOSH Checklist on PPE)

·         Afternoon break
4.00pm – 5.30pm
·         Group-work: Identifying Chemical Handling Methods based on CSDS of chemicals being handled at work-place;
·         Presentation
·         Discussion and training evaluation.
